Umephi Welfare Project SHORT HISTORY OF THE AFM BELHAR SUSAN LAPOORTA UMEPHI SATELITE HOME

During 2007 our Assembly Governing Body was approached by representatives of the AFM National Welfare Dept. [ Dr. J.J. Lapoorta, Past. S. Lapoorta and Ms. Helena Jackson ] to form partnership in the Umephi Children’s Project.

A representation of the AFM Belhar Assembly attended the meeting where a request was put forward for our involvement in the Project. On Sunday 2nd March 2008 we had our first meeting with Past. S. Lapoorta who informed us about due processes to be followed. The Assembly Governing Body endorsed the proposal put forward. The Assembly also endorsed the proposal put to them, and an enthusiastic effort to make the Project to work was launched.

On 26th March 2008 Sist. S. Williams was officially appointed by the Umephi Western Cape Management Committee as Caregiver for the Umephi Children’s Home in Belhar. Sarah Coetzee was appointed on 1st July 2008 as Assistant Caregiver by the Belhar Umephi Management Committee.

Currently eight children are catered for in the Belhar Project. We would also want to acknowledge Glacier Development Consultants as our senior partners in the project. We envisage a long term relationship with them.

Our Aim is to Reach, Empower and Release our Children as valuable members of society that can contribute in a positive manner to their communities.
